Huh.

Sometimes dabbling with different methods of painting allows you to make great strides in technique. In the case of this painting, I realized how to paint thumbnail first, rather than paint detail first. I was able to visualize and block out the major parts so the thumbnail looks great and then fill in the details afterwards. Strange that I realized that the same principle applies to painting when I've been applying it to pixel art for years. Better late than never, I suppose. o3o

Well. :U Here's another gryphon in that generic pose. (I apologize to my watchers. I assure you this is coincidence.) Apparently, they're my choice of creature for experimentation. But it's not the Suiguno. Instead, this one is apparently what my friends and I call a 'gryphox', which is a gryphon-fox. Even if gryphons are typically bird + mammal and foxes are mammals, so it's really still just a gryphon. :P And even then, it doesn't look very fox-like besides the tail. I designed the head with more cat-like features instead. >3>

I'd say I can portion the time spent on this drawing into three parts: the main body, the forelegs, and the wings. If drawing body parts (head, hind legs, tail) took one unit of time, the front legs took three units of time, and the wings separately took three units of time. The front legs were a hassle because the colors and textures didn't match well with the rest of the character. The wings were a hassle because... I still can't draw actual bird wings. I always draw them as fans of feathers. @_@ You would think that after having drawn so many feathery things I would know better. The wings look flat, red feathers look translucent while the yellow feathers look opaque, and everything looks stylized in the wrong way.

On the other hand, I am very, very pleased with how some parts came out. The shading on the hind legs and tail work very nicely. I somehow made the eyes and eyebrow region look realistic when I was expecting only something mediocre. The ears and tail look so fluffy, and I have no idea how I managed to make them look that way. :D I think I had a few hours of inspiration after indulging in art, which I probably can't replicate anytime soon. ._.

Oh, and I still use a mouse for my art, you guys. :D; It just takes probably 10 times as long (maybe) to get the strokes right.

I like to document which references I ended up using for some of the more elaborate pieces, so here they are:

I was on hiatus when you posted this all those years ago. This looks just downright phenomenal! The tail is so fluffy and the paint strokes are so delicately place and deeply detailed. The wings and wing anatomy are downright gorgeous, Quan! Your certainly have the tails floofs and the eagle/ bird and fox elements co-mingling so wonderfully ^^

I noticed you mentioned you still draw with a mouse, this is downright incredible you attain and achieve such articulate brushstrokes with a mouse. Kudos, what a wonderful piece of art!! :D
