So, Generation VI has already started--quite a short time, I must say, since Generation V. I was rather surprised at the large announcement from Game Freak, but as a pokemon fan, I must prepare. :P

So here are some sprites of the newest starter trio. I'm rather upset that Game Freak's going to make the transition from 2-D sprites to 3-D models, since that puts sprites closer to being obsolete. D: I know that the move to 3-D is inevitable, but I've started sprites from Pokemon and moved onward. It'd sad to have that inspiration leave.

Darn Fennekin's color and type similarity to my Ninetales character. I'll have to tell future generations of people that my design came before Fennekin. XD

Game Freak's characters belong to them, and I just make art of them for my and other people's pleasure instead of infringing on their designs.

I'm going to miss sprites so much, but 3D is cool :D

I'm gonna miss sprites, too. I always thought that the reason they used sprites in the games was graphical preference, not technical necessity, but it looks like I was wrong!
I hope they still have sprite versions of them in the PokeDex or something. x3

I've thought of them as technical necessity, since a DS probably can't render very many high-quality 3-D shapes well (358/2 Days, ahem). The 3DS can, and, well, why not use the 3D part of the 3DS for that?

I feel I'll lose my way with sprites. D: But I'll remain stalwart!

The original DS was also old as hell, it came out when I was still in COLLEGE, which was almost 10 years ago (my god), so yeah, it was a bit lacking in 3D animation when compared to say, the PSP...(actually that's the only other handheld I can think of). xD

So yeah, this upgrade to the DS handheld line is pretty significant, although I'm still surprised it's able to deal with now 700+ rendered Pokemon! xD That'd be pretty damned impressive, even on a disc-based system! And the 3DS still uses carts!

Don't worry - there will always be people who prefer sprites. Even I do, in some cases, like platformers especially. Homebrew/indie games will always have a place for them, at least! I'm sure there will still be sprites in mainstream games, too.

Daaah, now I want to get a 3DS. Like that guy in each starting trainer's town says, technology is amazing!

Thank you for the encouragement on that niche for sprites. :) I know of indie games that still use them in 2012, so there's hope for them, yet!
